AI can affect your car insurance rate by helping an insurer predict how likely you are to file a claim and how costly that claim may be. What does AI mean in car insurance?

Should you join an AI based telematics program?

It may be a poor match for a night worker, delivery driver, frequent highway commuter, or person whose phone often records passenger trips as driving.

Ask these questions first:

  • How long does scoring last, and does it restart at renewal?
  • Can I correct a trip when I was a passenger?
  • How long is the data kept, and how can I request deletion?
  • What happens if I stop participating?

Save the enrollment terms and your driving score. Rules can differ by state.

Can AI make an unfair or incorrect insurance decision?

Yes. AI can repeat errors in source data, rely on a weak correlation, or produce results that are hard to explain.

The NAIC model bulletin identifies inaccuracy, unfair discrimination, data vulnerability, and limited transparency as consumer risks. It says insurance decisions supported by AI must still comply with laws covering unfair practices and unfair discrimination.

As of April 1, 2026, an NAIC status map listed 24 states plus the District of Columbia as adopters of its AI model bulletin. California had separate insurance guidance on the map.

The bulletin calls for:
